Sherwood, New Zealand
An adaptive reuse of a 1985 mock-Tudor motor inn, the Sherwood Community Hotel has fast become a cultural hub in Queenstown. Set on three acres of alpine hillside in Queenstown overlooking Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables range, Sherwood offers a unique setting to unwind, and reconnect with self and nature. It was recognized by Expedia as one of the world’s “Top 10 Eco-Friendly Stays” on Earth Day 2019.
We were involved in helping to transform this once motor-in style retirement village into one of New Zealand’s most happening bar/restaurant/ hotel with their mantra “be here now”. The retrofit investments have been focused on sustainability, communal areas and atmosphere rather than simply design.
Reuse of materials and structure has been key to this project. We received a $100,000 grant to help convert the heating system to run on renewable biomass. We also helped the bar move towards zero waste operations and are now in the process of addressing the rest of the hotel in terms of waste. The Sherwood also features one of New Zealand’s largest private solar PV installs.
